Background

Sofia Quaglioni was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Arizona prior to joining LLNL in 2006. She received a 2011 Early Career Award from the DOE Office of Science and currently serves as deputy group leader of LLNL’s Nuclear Data and Theory group. She has served on the National Advisory Committee of the Institute for Nuclear Theory and on the Theory User Group Executive Committee of the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams. As a member of panels sponsored by the DOE Offices of Advanced Scientific Computing Research and Nuclear Physics, Quaglioni has provided advice on the computing requirements needed to support forefront scientific research in nuclear physics. She is presently a member of the joint DOE/NSF Nuclear Science Advisory Committee.

Research Interests

Quaglioni’s research seeks a unified understanding of the structural and reaction properties of nuclei, starting from the constituent protons and neutrons and accurate representations of the nuclear interactions among them. Her work has helped lead to the emergence of a new, more fundamental understanding of light nuclei and their reactions, which are important to stellar astrophysics and fusion energy programs. She is currently working on the treatment of bound and continuum nuclear systems in the proximity of three-body breakup thresholds and quantifying how uncertainties in the nuclear interaction models affect light-nuclei scattering and fusion cross sections. Quaglioni is also a member of the multi-institutional DOE Topical Collaboration on Double Beta Decay and Fundamental Symmetries, which aims at using nuclear theory to address questions about fundamental particles and symmetries.
