Research Interests

The Synthesis Group of the Energetic Materials Section at LLNL is dedicated to the development of new energetic materials for possible use in both the DOE and DoD weapons development programs. Our efforts over the past few years have concentrated in three main areas of interest:

  1. New, insensitive compounds that possess more than 80% the power of HMX
  2. New energetic compounds that possess more energy than HMX or CL-20
  3. New propellant ingredients, including new high-nitrogen burn rate modifiers for gun propellants

Research interests include energetic materials synthesis and characterization, synthesis of high-nitrogen materials as burn rate modifiers for gun propellants, gas generators and smokeless pyrotechnics, development of new synthetic methodologies and nitration methods, scale-up and optimization of energetic materials syntheses, heterocycle syntheses, and isotopically-labeled energetic materials and their precursors.
